Obedience Training
About Obedience
Obedience training is the foundation upon which all canine activities are based, whether conformation, agility, tracking, search & rescue, service dogs, fieldwork, etc. Obedience Trials demonstrate the usefulness of the purebred dog as a human companion and showcase dogs that have been trained and conditioned to properly behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. AKC trials and tests allow exhibitors and their dogs to enjoy companionship and competition as they proudly earn AKC titles. To learn more about obedience trials, visit AKC's Obedience Guide. |
Basic Obedience
This class will cover basic obedience commands such as heeling, sit, down, and come to the handler. Neither dogs nor handlers need any experience for this class. We will work on dogs paying attention to the handler in the presence of other dogs and distractions. Instructions and practice exercises for the Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) award from AKC are incorporated into the class. An opportunity to try for the CGC award if the dog is ready, is offered at the end of the class session.
Beginner 1
This class is also for dogs and handlers with no training experience. IT covers the same class material as Basic Obedience, but also offers a few hints about how to show your dog in obedience if you are interested.
Beginner 2
This class is for dogs ready to work at an intermediate level. Dogs must be able to stay for at least 1 minute at a sit and down, heel correctly, and do recall from a distance. Permission of the instructor is required to move from Beginner 1 class to Beginner 2.
Preparation for Beginner Novice/Novice Competition
Prepare for the spring AKC obedience trials, especially SCKC/QCDOC March 22-23. We will go through the exercises for the Beginner Novice class and the Novice class. Need to have completed "Beyond Beginner" or two sessions of "Beginner 2"
